Default Going off the “Touristy” Trail While in Vietnam

Vietnam has become a popular destination and one you ought not to miss. And although there are many well-known places you should include in your itinerary, there are also other less frequented sites that beckon discovery. One of the least known treasures is Nha Trang on the south central coastline. Its picturesque landscape of white sandy beaches and coconut filled palm trees has only recently begun to attract discerning world travelers.

So if you’re serious about dining on superb food, experiencing true local color and witnessing the most magnificent scenery, Nha Trang is for you. Best of all, you don’t have to worry about choosing the right season for a visit. The weather is certainly delightful throughout the year, with some rain in the month of November.

While in Nha Trang, make sure to visit the Center for Marine Science, now part of the Oceanography Institute, the biggest in Southeast Asia. See a myriad of marine species and all the exhibits that relate to conservation. Go on a boat tour of the Nha Trang Bay, a kaleidoscope of gem colors and one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the country. If you’re a snorkeling or scuba diving enthusiast, the coral reefs and underwater life will more than impress. And if you’d rather stay on terra firma, tours of the Palace of Emperor Bao Dai, and the Long Son Pagoda with its gigantic statue of Buddha are a must.

As you go on to discover the beauty of Nha Trang, stop by the regional restaurants. They feature delectable seafood dishes, barbecued pork specialties and mouthwatering bird’s nest soup, the very best of Vietnamese gastronomy.

Enjoy the nightlife, especially if you’re in town during the end of January or beginning of February, the time when the nation celebrates the lunar New Year. And if your visit coincides with the Sea Festival, don’t miss out on the dances and festivities that depict the free and happy disposition of the people.

Getting to Nha Trang is easily accomplished by flying into the Cam Ranh International Airport, located at just 33 kilometers south. But leaving is a different story. Once you experience this corner of Vietnam, you won’t want to go elsewhere.

So plan your trip now. Nha Trang waits for you.
